Flintshire Sense of Place Project
November 16, 2009
Project Area: Sustainable Tourism
County: Flintshire
Project Officer: Keira Derbyshire
Axis: 3
What is the project?
The Flintshire Sense of Place Project aims to develop a sense of place in rural Flintshire through combining the area’s unique natural and cultural assets to develop the tourism product in the area. Financial support is available for projects which help communities to share their heritage with visitors to the area and provide more recreational and economic opportunities for the communities themselves.
How can we help?
Financial support can be applied for to fund projects which aim to develop the tourism and recreational opportunities within rural Flintshire and which celebrate the heritage and culture of the rural area. Funds could contribute towards a wide range of things, such as the development of new trails, improved interpretation, and improved access to a site. It’s also important that residents and visitors to an area are aware of the various facilities and services available. So, projects which help groups and business to work together to encourage people to take advantage of local facilities are also welcome.
Who can apply?
Eligible groups include Local, Town and Community Councils, business groups, voluntary groups, community groups, clubs and societies in rural Flintshire. Cadwyn Clwyd will work directly with these groups to develop the projects.
Project News / Case Study
To date, money made available through this project is being used to fund a variety of work, all of which aims to benefit the residents of rural Flintshire. Some of this work aims to provide a more strategic focus for the sustainable development of tourism within the County, such as studies focused on places like Mold and Talacre. These studies are a step towards strengthening the area’s tourist offer and economy. Other work aims to engage directly with people living in rural Flintshire. For example;
Flintshire Community Booklets
Funding has been approved to produce a series of eight bilingual community booklets for rural communities in Flintshire which have a population of 5000 or less. Working alongside an appointed consultant this project will give the chosen communities an opportunity to produce a booklet to celebrate where they live. These booklets will form part of a series which will be available for local residents and visitors to the area alike.
Halkyn Lime Kilns
Funding was approved in July to carry out a survey of the Waen Brodlas Lime Kilns on Halkyn Mountain. James Brotherhood and Associates have recently been appointed to carry out this work which involves a structural survey of the monument, an assessment of the immediate ground conditions and details of treatment options for the kilns which will be used as a guide to successfully restore the kilns. The contractor will begin to survey the site in September 09 and produce their finding in early 2010.
